Do you have a lesbian mom? Do you know someone with lesbian moms? You may and not even be aware of it! Maybe you’ve only heard about a lesbian mom on the news. Perhaps you aren’t sure how you feel about the topic. Regardless, with more states legalizing gay marriage, you’ll need to get used to hearing about the topic of lesbian moms.
Today, anywhere from four to six million children are being raised by a gay parent in some capacity. However, these statistics do not specifically include kids raised by a lesbian mom. On the other hand, roughly 65,000 adopted children are being raised by gay couples, representing four percent of all adoptions. The exact facts are unknown, but it’s probable that lesbian moms account for most of these couples.
The are several ways that a lesbian becomes a mom. The first is having a child with a man. This can be done in marriage, before she comes out of the closet, or with a man for the purpose of having a child. The second way to become a lesbian mom is to use artificial insemination, like a through a sperm bank or donor. Finally, many lesbian moms have their kids through adoption where such adoptions are legal.
Before I discuss tips for handling the issue of a lesbian mom with sensitivity, I want to discuss the debate about lesbian moms. There are three basic views. The first view says that a lesbian mom as a parent is immoral since marriage and parenting are only for a straight couple. This is held by conservatives, especially religious individuals. The second view is that lesbian moms should be celebrated and embraced. This is the liberal view.
The final opinion is that whatever a person may feel about a lesbian mom, the issue is not one that should involve government or moral interference. In other words, even if someone doesn’t like it, lesbian moms have a right to their choices. This is the libertarian position.
If you meet someone with a lesbian mom, the first thing to remember is not to judge them. Even if you disagree with lesbian moms, remember that you show respect every day to people you disagree with. Will the kids of lesbian moms have problems? Sure! But think of the problems you have in your family or you caused for your family. Someone with a lesbian mom may have different problems, but probably no greater than yours.
In addition, remember that the children of a lesbian mom are already subject to harassment for being different. Since so few children have a lesbian mom, bullies often single out their children for abuse. As an adult, you should not pile on the kids with lesbian moms. Be mature and remember that whatever you may feel about their parents, no child, even one with a lesbian mom, deserves to be bullied or harassed.
Finally, you should reach out to the lesbian moms in your community. You’ll probably find that they are nice people with the same joys and struggles as you. You may even make friends with a lesbian mom. You can learn from them and they can learn from you.
