Love Poems: From Marry me to I Love You

Love Poems have always been a way that a man can express his love for a woman, or a woman for a man. Many love poems have been written throughout time, some of the best known by Shakespeare, Keats, and even Mark Twain! Some love poems come from the heart, while others should probably be thrown into the toilet!!

What makes for good love poems? Well I would guess that the answer would be different depending on who you talk to. For a professor of English literature, the answer to good love poems might be found in the meter and the verse. The technical aspects such as metaphor or deeper meaning. I know that I have taken a few classes from professors like this in my life, and what they consider to be great love poems are sometimes confusing at best. Of course, academics have a way of yanking the life out of a piece of art as they over-analyze some loves poems.

What is best is when you find a professor that is not only good at the technical aspect of love poems, but can dive into their deep meaning- the meaning that the author intended. This is when we see both sides of the love poems that we might be studying, both the technical and the meaningful. A professor like this can make the love poems come to life and kindle the fires of love within the heart of the person that hears the love poems.

Of course, we can look past all this technical stuff to get to the heart and soul of what makes love poems truly touching. Modern day love poems manifest themselves in the form of music on the radio, rap songs, and even speeches made from the depth of a character’s heart in the midst of a romantic movie, or even better, a romantic comedy. This is where the singer or the character in the movie sings and declares of the virtues of love.

What I think makes good love poems are the depth which they can touch a persons heart. Even if the rhyme and meter aren’t perfect, love poems have their most effect when they are written from the heart, recited from the heart, and touch the other person’s heart who hears them. Good love poems need to be read out loud, even if one is reading them alone because true love involved the whole body, mind, and soul. How deeply can we understand the famous soliloquy by Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, and his love that he has for her as he sees her on the balcony. These are the type of love poems that ignite the soul of a man and woman who not only hears them, but says themselves

So, no matter how love poems are manifested, they should proceed from the heart- they should be said with passion and vigor, they should be said with meaning. Even if the love poems are simple declaration of the love of a child for their mother, no mother can reject love poems from the heart. Likewise, if a man wants to win a girl over, love poems, even ones that he didn’t not write himself, saif from the heart, can open the heart of even the most difficult woman.

So go, be inspired! Read, recite, and be enlivened by the greatness of love poems! Be they song, poem, monologue, or simple words from the heart.
